Breznitz emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Israel after the war, where he became rector and president of the University of Haifa. He had been living in an orphanage during the war, and throughout his professionl life has been working primarily on issues of fear and threat in situations of objective helplessness. He has become interested in studying the effects of 'hope' on negotiating exteme distress.
