Taken by American lecturer and traveler Julien Bryan on 15 September 1939, the photograph includes a caption describing the image and events leading up to it. It indicates that seven Polish women had been picking potatoes in a field on the outskirts of Warsaw when German planes fired on them, killing two of the women - including Kazimiera's older sister. The image depicts the tragic civilian impact of Germany's invasion of Poland.
