BeskrivningPhotograph depicting Albert Hertzberg blowing the Shofar at a Rosh Hashana service, September 1944, which included Australian and American military personnel.
Albert Abraham Hertzberg, born 26 May 1917 in Sydney, enlisted in the Australian Army on 16 November 1939, aged 22. He was discharged in January 1963, Rank Warrant Officer Class 2.
In an accompanying letter dated 30 September 1944, Hy Havers, Captain US Air Force (one of the men in the Jewish congregation), writes to Albert’s mother, Mrs Hertzberg, that he has had the good fortune and pleasure of meeting her son, Albert, and he writes: “… you have every right to be proud of Albert and let me tell you that he is a humdinger of a Shofar blower. By now you’ve heard all about our services for the New Year – but let me say that it wouldn’t have been a New Year service without the Shofar. Hertzberg not only produced one for us and thus made every one feel that he was attending real holiday services but when he gave out in the traditional manner – I wish you could have seen the eyes and faces of all the men attending, there was joy on hearing the old shofar call…”
