BeskrivningYarmulke or Kippah belonging to Oscar Shub and Ilan Buchman and worn on the wedding day. Inlaid in gold the embossed font on the front reads: ‘Wedding of Ilan & Oscar 2 May 2018’.
The couple met at a dinner party in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1971 and have been together since. They initially settled in South Africa, immigrating to Australia in 1986. Australia passed the marriage equality law on 9 December 2017, shortly after, Oscar and Ilan set a date to be married. Their ceremony was the first Jewish religious same-sex marriage in Australia and was presided over by Rabbi Jeffrey Kamins at Emmanuel Synagogue on 2 May 2018.
As well as the yarmulke, the couple also donated their acceptance rings inscribed with 'until we all belong'; during the nuptials Oscar and Ilan exchanged these for traditional, full circle wedding rings. The Museum also received a photograph of Oscar and Ilan taken in Johannesburg 1972, photos taken by Mark Singer at the ceremony and a hashtag sign from their celebrations.
