The author and her mother, bound for deportation from a ghetto in Lvov, were taken into the care of a Catholic woman and her family, who treated the young Freda cruelly after her mother was forced to leave. After several moves, including a stay at an orphanage for Jewish children, Freda was reunited with her mother five years later.
