Jewish fears of an approaching apocalypse at the beginning of the century were confirmed by the genocide of the Armenians, and had an immense influence on generations in the pre-state 'Yishuv'. The plight of the Armenians thus became associated with the tragedy of the Jews. However the state of Israel has retained an evasive attitude toward the Armenian genocide partly because of its insistance on the uniqueness of the Holocaust
