ОписаниеIn March 1938, Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany in the “Anschluss”. From May 1938, the racist Nuremberg laws applied in Austria, and Austrian Jews were steadily ostracised from their societies during the process of “Aryanisation.” This tension came to a climax in the Kristallnacht pogrom from 9th-10th November.
In the meantime, Hardy Brothers, a British jewellery-making firm, offer young Leo Steiner from Vienna employment in Sydney, Australia as a jewellery mounter in July 1938. However, the Gestapo threaten to arrest Jews issued with travel documents who do not leave within a short time. Whilst Leo’s Australian landing permit is pending, it is therefore prudent to seek temporary refuge in a third country. Before he is discharged from his erstwhile firm Vienna Art Designs, Leo’s employer Oscar Fastlich writes that his stay in Switzerland is necessary for business. In July, Leo moves to Zurich on a temporary stay visa, leaving his parents, Adolf and Hermine, and brother Paul, behind in Vienna.
This is a formal request to the British consulate in Vienna for a temporary stay on behalf of Leo’s parents and brother. Leo advises the consulate of his future employment at Hardy Bros in order to reassure the reader that he would be able to provide for his family members so that they would not become a burden to the state.

Leo Steiner, Jewellery Assembler;
Born 22.2.1918, Prague;
Belonging to Vienna, Germany;
Allows himself to make the following request to the Hon. Consulate:
I am travelling on the steamer “Oronsay” from Toulon on the 13th of next month to Sydney (Australia), where I have been employed by a large jewellery firm (Hardy Bros Limited). I will have a salary and therefore will immediately have the opportunity to apply for permits for my parents and brother, who are still in Vienna.
In my desperation I turn to the Hon. Consulate to request a permit for my parents and brother to stay in England for no longer than approximately 3 months (the time it takes for the finalisation of the Australian permit).
My parents have been expelled from Germany as of Jan 31 1939 and must leave the country before then. I hope that the Hon. Consulate will understand my position as a son and will grant my request. Below please find my parents’ and brother’s particulars, and thanking you in anticipation.
