НазваниеIdentification Card
ОписаниеIdentification card for Edgar Boehm, issued in 1936. Edgar’s identification information is listed inside the booklet, along with a passport-sized photo of him. This identity card was issued to all merchants and salespeople, and was an important employment document.
Edgar was born on the 13th of January, 1905 in Barth, Germany. His father, Siegmund Boehm, owned the successful department store, Siegmund Boehm, which sold haberdashery and homewares. Edgar married Irene Rothholz on the 3rd of November, 1935, and settled in Irene’s home town of Breslau. In Breslau, Edgar opened his own wholesale business, but four years later had to sell his business for a fraction of its value. In January 1939, Edgar left Germany for Shanghai with Irene, Irene’s mother Sylvia, and Irene’s younger brother Rudi. The family was interned in Hongkew Ghetto by the Japanese, where Edgar found work as a waiter. In 1940, Irene gave birth to their daughter, Dorrit. In 1946, Edgar’s sister, Alice, sponsored the family’s immigration to Australia. After spending three months in transit in Hong Kong, they arrived in Australia on the 28th of October 1946.
