ОписаниеPhotograph of Denis Frederick Carver with wife Gertrude Carver (nee Elter) on the streets of Sydney, Australia, undated. Denis Frederick Carver (born Fritz Schnitzer) was born 11 October 1909 in Vienna. He was a victim of the 1938 Anschluss which saw the annexation of Austria into Germany; resulting in his migration to Shanghai, the only open port accessible without a visa. He arrived in Shanghai on 9 January 1939. He was interned from 18 May 1943 until 15 August 1945.
He arrived in Australia on 28 January 1947 on the Hwa Lien. A landing permit indicates Fritz Schnitzer’s permission to immigrate to Australia via his uncle, Rudolph John Carver, who is the guarantor on the document in 1946. He anglicised his name, with Carver being English for Schnitzer. He was appointed Honorary Consul-General for the Sydney Austrian Embassy in Australia in 1968, and was in this position until 1977, receiving two medals of service and merit from the Republic of Austria in 1972 and 1977.
