Названиеtorah mantle
ОписаниеA dark blue velvet Torah mantle of Sephardic type which was donated to SJM with the Torah M2015/017:001. Simple golden application in the shape of Star of David and tassles. The Sefer Torah No. 1054 was rescued from the synagogue in Uhlířské Janovice, former Czechoslovakia during the occupation of Bohemia and Moravia by the Nazis. The number 1054 refers to the 'Czech Memorial Scrolls Westminster Synagogue London 1964-5724'. The scroll was inscribed in 1900. It is not known at this stage whether the Torah came to Australia with this particular mantle or wheter it was made here. The congregation is expected to provide more in information in due course.
Uhlířské Janovice is a small town about 1 hour drive south east from Prague. Former Jewish presence is documented by few remnants of the Jewish cemetery.
In 1964, 1,564 Czech Sefer Torah’s and 400 Torah binders were sold by the Czechoslovak government after long negotiations and shipped to London by the Memorial Scrolls Trust at Westminster Synagogue, for restoration and distribution. Many of them have been distributed throughout the world as memorials to the Jewish tragedy.
The scroll, binder and mantle were on a permanent loan from the Czech Memorial Torah Scrolls Trust, London to the Strathfield Synagogue from 1989-2015. After the closure of the synagogue three items were placed in a temporary care of the Sydney Jewish Museum in May 2015. The SJM will discuss the future suitable home of the scroll with Joseph Tolz, the Australian rep for the Memorial Scrolls. See Accompanying texts for details on status of this object on M2015/017:001.
