ОписаниеTorah scroll, also known as a Memorial Scroll or Sefer Torah No. 1054 was rescued from the synagogue in Uhlířské Janovice in former Czechoslovakia during the occupation of Bohemia and Moravia by the Nazis. The number 1054 refers to the catalogue of the 'Czech Memorial Scrolls Westminster Synagogue London 1964-5724'. The scroll was inscribed in 1900.
Uhlířské Janovice is a small town about 1 hour drive south east from Prague. Former Jewish presence is documented by few remnants of the Jewish cemetery.
In 1964, 1,564 Czech Sefer Torah’s and 400 Torah binders were sold by the Czechoslovak government after long negotiations and shipped to London by the Memorial Scrolls Trust at Westminster Synagogue, for restoration and distribution. Many of them have been distributed throughout the world as memorials to the Jewish tragedy. This scroll comes from the Sydney's Strathfield & District Hebrew Congregation where it was used until recently. Due to the current dwindling numbers of the congregation, the community decided to find a new home for the precious item.
The original certificate for MST#1054 is included with the scroll.
Czech Memorial Torah scroll No. 1054
This Torah came originally from a synagogue in a small Czech town Uhlířské Janovice where Jews lived from the 18th century. In 1942 they were deported by the Nazis to concentration camps. Forlorn synagogue treasures such as this Torah scroll were stored in the Central Jewish Museum in Prague whose curators valiantly strove to preserve the legacy while working under Nazi occupation. Nowadays there is no Jewish population left in Uhlířské Janovice and the baroque style synagogue is serving as a prayer house of Czechoslovak Hussite Church.
Torah scroll, Bohemia, c1900. One of 1,564 scrolls restored by the Westminster Synagogue in London in 1964. Since then, hundreds of precious scrolls were distributed to Jewish communities worldwide in memory of murdered communities. On permanent loan through Sydney's Strathfield & District Hebrew Congregation.
The scroll was on loan from the Czech Memorial Torah Scrolls Trust, London to the Strathfield Synagogue from 1989-2015. After the closure of the synagogue it was placed in a temporary care of the Sydney Jewish Museum in May 2015.
