ОписаниеNewspaper in German from Shanghai, "Osteasiatische Lloyd", 9th May 1945. Collected by Edgar and Irene Boehm, Jewish refugees in Shanghai from 1939 until 1946 when they migrated to Australia.
The single pages of this paper from this period are of major historical interest containing the latest announcements of the end of World War II in the West but strangely no large scale expressions of sympathy about the outcome towards their German Allies. One article however describes Hitler’s death as “Heroic”
Major cities, one by one throughout Europe are conquered by the Allied armies, in Croatia, Czechoslovakia and Germany itself as the whole German resistance is crumbling.
In the Far East hostilities by the “Enemy” in the Okinawa region are on the increase in a matter-of fact announcement. But life goes on in occupied Shanghai, with ads on laundry helps, house painters, mattresses, pearls, pain relievers, Cello recitals, shaving gear and so on. One obviously Czech craftsman by the name of Hrdlicka will install window frames and fly screens. You can also learn Russian by correspondence.
