ОписаниеCross-stitch multi-coloured textile with floral motifs, mounted on floral patterned fabric.
Elsa Schwartz hand-stitched this blanket (used as a cape or throw) while she waited for her husband and two sons to return from forced labour. She was in a concentration camp during the German invasion of Slovakia. After liberation, she hoped to be reunited with her family. To comfort herself during the lonely hours of waiting, she embroidered this blanket. Each stitch represents a prayer for her husband and sons to return from forced labour. They never did. The donor remarks: “All the sorrow and sadness of our past is contained in these stitches.”
Donated by Irma Sutton (nee Schwartz), niece of Elsa Schwartz
