The Torah was donated to the Museum by Michael and Sharon Court (originally Berkovitch). Michael Court worked for the Shell Company in Harbin, dealing petrol in North Russia and China, until 1952.
The Torah scroll was most likely a New Year gift. It originates from Harbin, Manchuria (China). Harbin was home to a thriving Russian Jewish community in the 1920s and 1930s.
