ОписаниеWhen Herman Eljovic lost the original tefillin bag that he had received from his parents on the occasion of his Barmitzvah and which they had urged him to take when he was forced to join a Hungarian labour camp, he found this bag which may have been lost or discarded by a German soldier or camp guard. It served well to protect his tefillin for the remainder of the war, including his internment at Mauthausen Concentration Camp and thereafter. The item would have been produced and issued in very large numbers throughout the Second World War. The rubberised bag itself was intended to hold a soldiers’ gas cape, which would have provided some limited protection for the wearer had he encountered gas. Since the cape was also waterproof, it was carried by most soldiers as a rain cape. It could equally have been used to carry bread, as indicated by the donor. The bag has clips for closing and straps at the back for attachment to a belt. The stamp on the inside of the closing flap shows it was made by Brothers Wendler & Co of Leutlinger, Germany (Gebrüder Wendler). Beneath the maker's mark is a military stamp with an eagle with barely visible Swastika.
