ОписаниеIlluminated certificate (Gedenkblatt) presented to Samuel Hammermann, grandfather of the donor Toby Hammerman, for his charitable work on behalf of the Jewish charitable organization "Rodef Zedukoh" (promoter of good deeds). At the bottom of the document is a quotation in Hebrew, "Justice and compassion will lead you to life". The certificate was awarded to Hammermann on the 20th anniversary of his contribution to the organization in Berlin (1912-1932).
Samuel Hammermann was born in 1892 in Kalish, Poland, and migrated to Berlin in 1903, working as a furrier. He fought in World War 1 in the Austrian Army. He immigrated to Australia in 1939 with his wife Batia and their youngest daughter. The eldest daughter went to Palestine. Two sons arrived in Australia in 1936 and 1937 respectively. The document reflects the richness of Jewish life in pre War Germany, a striking contrast to the subsequent horror of Nazi rule. Toby's father Bernhard (son of Samuel) dropped the 2nd "n" on his name - Hammerman.
