ОписаниеLarge wooden/cloth trunk with two metal locks (and two keys), two leather handles (one is missing), reinforced with wooden frames and metal joints. Internal movable shelf of wood/cloth. Yellow in colour with large letters on to “R.S.F.” (Ruth Stern). Has label with “Kaapstadt” (Cape Town).
Ruth Simon (nee Stern) was born 28 August 1924 in Hanover. The cabin trunk was used when she and her parents escaped from Germany, by ship from Hamburg, in 1939 to Bulawayo (Then Southern Rhodesia) via Cape Town. It contained monogrammed linen and other items for their new lives since money could no longer be taken out. Ruth met and married Wolfgang Simon in Cape Town. They immigrated to Sydney in 1981.
