НазваниеWooden chessboard belonging to Paul Gottlieb
ОписаниеHinged wooden chessboard. It belonged to Paul Gottlieb, the donor, Lotte Forsher's, first husband.
Paul and Lotte were married on 13 November 1941, two days before they were transported to Theresienstadt ghetto-concentration camp. Paul was then deported to Auschwitz, and from there to Schwarzheide, then to Oranienburg (both sub-camps of Sachsenhausen). It was at both of these camps that he had the chess board. He and other inmates used to play chess, with stones as chess pieces. Paul was liberated at Oranienburg by the Russians. He died on 9 May 1945, on the day of liberation, after eating rich, fatty meat given to him by the Russians. Paul's friend George Nathan who was with him during the war, and who knew what happened to him, gave the chessboard to Lotte after the war. (Source: Lotte Forsher)
