ОписаниеAustralian Jewry Book of Honour listing the Australian Jewish Members of the Australian Armed Forces during World War I. Compiled by Harold Boas and published in 1923.
According to Boas, "The object of the Book is to place on permanent record Australian Jewry's practical part in the Great War, and to establish beyond question that Jewish citizens of the Empire, no less than members of any other Faith, are prepared to share the full burden of its citizen responsibilities as well as its privileges."
Harold Boas was an architect, town planner and Jewish community leader, born in 1883 in Adelaide. In July 1916 he was rejected for service with the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). He was determined to help with the war effort and in November was accepted for service with the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), despite being Jewish. He was given the honorary rank of lieutenant and without pay or other entitlements, he served in London as the Jewish Secretary for the YMCA. Alongside his Australian Jewry Book of Honour, the Great War 1914-1918, he also published The Australian Y.M.C.A with the Jewish solider of the Australian Imperial Force in 1919.
After the war, he worked as an architect in Perth and was heavily involved in the City Council town planning committees. Boas worked professionally and was active in public affairs until late in his life. He married Sadie 'Sarah' Cohen in 1911, and they had two daughters. He died in Perth in 1980, aged 96.
