ОписаниеHand engraved amulet featuring a priestly blessing in Hebrew found in the possession of Val Stern (nee Levy) by her son, David Stern. According to David, this amulet may have belonged to one of Val's partners; Pierre Lang or Mendel Gelberman, both of which were Holocaust survivors.
The first few lines of the Hebrew engraving are from The Priestly Blessing, Numbers 6:22-27, "May God bless you and guard you, may God's face shine on you and be gracious to you, may God's face be lifted to you and bring you peace." This blessing is traditionally said by children and their parents on Friday nights as part of the Shabbat ritual. The final four lines engraved on the amulet are from Genesis 49:22, "A charming son is Joseph, charming to the eye of women who strode a long time to see him."
The single chain at the top of the amulet indicates that it was made to be worn by the person seeking its magical powers of protection. Though its place of manufacture is unknown, "Relic of the Holocaust", implicit in the handwritten note that was found with the amulet, suggests that it may have been made in, or brought to a ghetto or concentration camp.
Val Stern was born in Australia 9 June 1933. Her family had originally lived in Poland and Russia before moving to England, and then finally to Australia. According to David, Val's mother arrived in Australia c.1904 with the hope of finding a better life.
Val was married to Wallace Isaac Stern when she was 18. According to David, Wallace's grandmother was the first Jewish wedding at the Hobart Shul. Val and Wallace had three children together; Peter, Kerrelyn (Kerre), and David.
Val was involved with the gathering of Holocaust survivors as well as setting up the Australian Association of Holocaust Survivors alongside Gus Lehrer and George Foster. She was also the secretary for the Australian Institute for Holocaust Studies, and was involved with interviewing Holocaust survivors between 1988-2001 for the Twelfth Hour Project. It was during this time that she met Holocaust survivors Pierre Lang and Mendel Gelberman.
