ОписаниеPoesie (poetry) album, dated 1934-1939, belonging to Susi Cohen (nee Katz). Poesie albums were popular with young people in 20th century Germany and were used to record quotes, verses, drawings and photos of friends, classmates and other acquaintances. The poetry album was a reminder of the people who shared in one’s life stages, particularly school and further study.
This album includes little poems and sayings from Susi’s friends in Essen, Amsterdam and the acquaintances she made on the ship “Ormonde” to Sydney. It also contains some photographs and a postcard from the ship. Some pages were later annotated when Susi knew of the fate of her friends.
Susi Katz was born in November 1920, to Ephraim and Esther Katz. Her father was a well-to-do wood carver, and had lived in Lodz, Poland, until he was transported to Essen, Germany to work in the coalmines during WWI. In January 1938, after a visit from the Gestapo, Susi and her parents escaped from Essen to Amsterdam. In November 1938, the family received a visa to go to Australia as refugees. Susi remembered that it was very hard to say goodbye to the dear friends she’d made in Amsterdam, friends she would never see again. They arrived in Sydney on board the Ormonde in January 1939. She worked as a maid and later as a nurse. On 6 April 1940, Susi married Jules Cohen, a trained actor.
