ОписаниеThis Kennkarte, or civil identity card, was issued in Berlin on 11 March 1939 to Gertrud Rohrstock, born 28 November 1903 in Berlin. As of July 1938, every German citizen over the age of 15 was required to carry a Kennkarte at all times. Deutsches Reich Kennkartes, those supplied in Germany, were distributed in a gloss linen rag paper to ensure their longevity and assist in the prevention of forgeries. Jewish citizenry were forced to adopt middle names of either ‘Sara’ or ‘Israel’ and a Hebraic ‘J’ was printed internally and externally, allowing for instant identification. This was another measure in a broader plan to bring an end to Jewish assimilation in German society. As the war progressed, citizens of German occupied territories were also issued with similar documents.
Gertrud Rohrstock (nee Sally) and her husband, Herbert, had one son, Alfred, born 23 August 1930. Following Kristallnacht, 9 – 10 November 1938, they decided to leave Berlin, but could not obtain a visa for America or Australia. Instead, Alfred was sent alone on a kindertransport to Australia, arriving in Melbourne on the SS Orama in June 1939. He was 9 years old. Herbert and Gertrud managed to escape Germany for Shanghai later in 1939. The family was not reunited until 1946, in Sydney.
This Kennkarte is part of a collection of items related to Alfred Stocks and his parents, Herbert and Gertrud Rohrstock.
