ОписаниеA personalised copy of Marcel Marceau biography, ‘Master of Mime’, written by Ben Martin, 1978. The inscription reads: “To Jacqueline, in memory of our time in Poulouzat. My Friendship, yours Bip - Marcel Marceau, 2001.”
The personal message was penned for Holocaust survivor Jacqueline Dale in 2001. She met Marcel in an OSE (Oeuvre de Secours aux Enfants) children’s home in Poulouzat, near Limoges France, around 1943. The OSE was an international children’s health care and welfare society operating homes across France during and after WWII. Post-war the pair remained in contact; Jacqui visited him in France and later they met up again in Australia.
Jacqueline Dale (nee Feldman) was born 18 January 1931. In 1942, together with her brother Charles (born 1937), she was sent to a Catholic orphanage in the town of Castera Verduzan. They spent time in various children’s homes and orphanages until liberation.
Marcel Marceau (formerly Marcel Mangel) was born 22 March 1923 in Strasbourg, Alsace. At the outbreak of war, he and his brother Alain became active in the underground. Marcel was involved in the rescue of children; forging details on identity cards and posing as a boy scout to accompany Jewish children across the Alps to safety. He found fame as a mime and international performer following liberation; Bip was the name of Marcel's on-stage persona.
