ОписаниеMedal awarded to Dr. Josef Blum, Red Cross humanitarian award. Oval-shaped, gold (plated?) medal with red cross on a shield in the centre, flanked by 2 angels. Reverse of medal inscribed "1864, 1914". Latin inscription on front of medal reads "Patriae ac Humanitati". Attached to red and white ribbon on a pin. White box with red cross and latin inscription on fromt "Patriae ac Humanitati 1864-1914 K.D."
Dr. Josef Blum was from Nagy Karoy, part of Romania which was later under Hungarian control. Dr Blum was awarded the Red Cross medal becuase he was president of a hospital that treated people who couldn't afford treatment. During the holocaust he was deported to Auschwitz, and did not survive. Dr Blum's wife was not Jewish, but saved many Jews during the war. She had wanted to go with her husband to Auschwitz, but was not allowed. She was named "Righteous Gentile".
