ОписаниеPhoto album containing approximately 450 photographs of the Hungarian-Jewish Sarkadis, and their extended family members.The earliest photo dates to c. 1890, and the latest is dated 1945.
The nuclear Sarkadi family was at this stage made up of Laszlo (b. 1907) and Ilona Sarkadi (nee Reisz, b. 1916), and their two sons Joseph (b. 1934), Stephen (b. 1938). Laszlo and Ilona came from families of farmland-owning businesspeople in the village of Kunszentmiklos, just south of Budapest. Laszlo's family name was originally Spitzer, but was Hungarianised to Sarkadi after World War II. Ilona's family had similarly changed their name from Reisz to Rabay in the mid 1930s.
Laszlo had three sisters - Ilonka, Margitka and Piroska (b. ?), and one brother - Jeno (b. 1897). Their parents were Joszef and Etelka Spitzer.
Ilona had two brothers - Emil (born c.1915), and Feri (born c.1911). Their parents were Ignacz (b. 1876) and Margit Reisz (nee Herceg, b. 1889). Margit had two brothers, Joszef and Pista.
The nuclear Sarkadi family all survived the Holocaust, but many of their family members did not.
This album contains family and individual portraits, as well as pre-war photos related to Ilona and Laszlo's wedding, Emil's athletic career, village celebrations in Kunszentmiklos (possibly including Purim), family trips and swimming expeditions. Portraits show some male family members in military dress, as World War I servicemen or 1930s conscripts.
Wartime photographs chart the family's movement and separation from one another, and some possibly relate to Laszlo's forced labour experience.
