Before the Holocaust, Vilnius was the centre of East European Jewry. The city that was home to five centuries of Jewish life dominates "From that place and time'', a memoir by Lucy Davidowicz. Hitler sought the total extermination of East European Jewry, however it was the Soviet Union that closed the book on Jewish life in Vilna. Vilnius gained an official Jewish community in 1988
