When the state was founded around 650,000 Jews lived in Israel, one-third of them survivors of the Holocaust. Their suffering was largely ignored in the early years. The Eichmann trial in 1961 was a turning point. In 1951 the Knesset agreed to the establishment of a national Shoah memorial day and in 1954 the Yad Vashem memorial was established at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
