Polish prisoners were the second largest group in Neuengamme concentration camp after Soviet prisoners. This group was made up of thousands of men whom the Gestapo had acused of resistance acitivities, and of Jewish men and women who were taken to Neuengamme via Auschwitz. Tadeusz Krystyniak was among the Poles deported. The culture of remembrance in Poland has been shaped by attempts ot revive the story of resistance. To coincide with the 60th anniversary of the Warsaw uprising, a museum opened in the Polish capital and is now one of the most frequently visited museums in Poland
