At the onset of World War II, Bulgaria sided with the Axis. Following Germany's invasion of Greece and Yugoslavia, Bulgarian troops moved in as an occupying force, and from these lands Bulgaria would deport over 11,000 Jews to the death camps. In 1943 Bulgaria deported 20,000 from occupied Thrace and Macedonia. There were two failed attempts to deport Bulgarian Jews. In postcommunist Bulgaria, the narrative of "the saving of the Bulgarian Jews" became an important story of Jewish rescue and survival
