Laura Bogdany, nee Leichtmann, was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1918. She was the youngest of six children in a poor family. Her father died when she was ten years old. She completed her education in the Communist party. Laura was apprenticed for five years in a chocolate factory, at same time working for the Social Democrat party.
Laura married Alex Emery, a non Jew and the leader of an underground anti-Fascist movement. In 1943 she joined her husband and a partisan group in the Ukraine and lived in the mountains.
