Explores little-known dimensions of the Holocaust on Soviet territory: how the Soviet state and citizens reacted to the annihilation of the Jewish population and how to understand the role of local participants. Includes an examination of the complicity of local populations in the mass murder of Jews, perpetrated in areas such as Poland, Ukraine, Bessarabia and northern Bukovina and analyzes Soviet responses to these events.
