Alfred Hofbauer was born in 1913 in Vienna and found refuge in France c. 1938. He escaped to Switzerland c. 1939, joined the French Foreign Legion 1939/1940, then the Pioneer Corps, British Army in 1943. He fought in North Africa and Italy in World War II and came to Australia in 1946.
