The Jews lived in apartments alongside non-Jewish neighbours - some of whom were openly inimical, who after the first years of Nazi rule, broke all social contacts with them. Under these circumstances, Jews needed places where they could be amongst their own. This called for the creation of 'Jewish spaces', in which they could feel secure.
