Since 1945, most continental European countries to a greater or lesser extent have been in some form of denial about their past treatment of the Jews, especially those involved directly or indirectly with the deportation and destruction of the Jews during the Nazi era. Three decades after his death, James Parkes bequeaths to us a challenging and insightful analysis of attitudes towards Jews. In spite of the work on antisemitism in the wake of the Holocaust, we are still at an early stage in building up a sociology of knowledge of the subject
