Work in the concentration camp system

One of the principles in the National Socialist concentration camps was that every prisoner had to work. All the prisoners were grouped in labour units supervised by one prisoner a "capo" or foreman. The work unit to which he was allocated was decisive for any chances at survival. When the men were admitted to the camp, the occupation of the prisoner was entered into his record card. A trade was useful, as metal workers, bricklayers, carpenters were requsitioned, however a lawyer, or other intellectuals were not in demand
