The starting point of this book is a photograph depicting a group of peasant 'diggers' posed casually atop a mountain of ashes at Treblinka, where 800,000 Jews were gassed and cremated between July 1942 and October 1943. Even after the war had ended, diggers searched for gold and precious stones that Nazi executioners may have overlooked.
