Hofbauer had attended satisfactorily, courses in window decoration. Dated 09.04.1930, Vienna. Alfred escaped from Austria to Switzerland c. 1939, joined the French Foreign Legion 1939/1940, then the Pioneer Corps, British Army in 1943. He fought in North Africa and Italy in World War II and came to Australia in 1946.
