Howard Jacobson had agreed to give the first annual Robert Fine Memorial Lecture on October 22 2023. Two weekends before that an organised unit of about 3,000 armed men broke across the border into Israel to murder, rape and kidnap as many people as they could. He gave the lecture, and gave the audience some comfort in the knowledge that literary leaders saw the seriousness of what had happened. Text of lecture
