Between 1940-43 a group of Polish diplomats and Jewish activists in Switzerland engaged in a humanitarian operation called the Lados operation. This was to rescue Jews trapped in German occupied Europe to escape using forged Latin American passports. At first these "exchange Jews" were interned to be exchanged for German citizens held abroad but after a timewhen the Latin American states began to question the authenticity of their papers.
