This essay examines the multiple iterations, in particular the Shoah outtakes from the extended interviews between Lanzmann and Hilberg to reveal some of the structuring presences and absences in the finished film. Those fragments illuminate the ways in which Lanzmann's and Hilberg's representational and historiographical approaches both converge and depart from one another in ways that can reshape critical interpretations of Shoah.
