This paper analyses the social characteristics of Jewish refugees who fled from Austria to Hungary after the 'anschluss' through the hospital records of refugees treated in the hospitals of the Jewish community of Pest. The Hungarian state left the decision making processes to the Jewish community to aid and care for refugees. This happened from 1938 onwards
