In eyewitness accounts of the Nazi extermination camps, mention is often made of the guards originating in the territory of the USSR, mostly Ukrainians who served and also participated in numerous executions of Jews and in the suppression of the Warsaw ghetto uprising. In 1943 a guard company composed of 150 sentries was formed in Birkenau.
