The expansion of the Auschwitz camp complex made protection against fires an everyday concern. The Birkenau camp was particularly at risk not only on account of the crematoria, and because of the large number of wooden barracks, and also because they were the targets of Allied bombing missions. It was therefore obvious that the camp authorities needed a professional fire-fighting service, and this was formed towards the end of 1941
