It is difficult to write historical mongraphs when all archival sources have been destroyed or are now behind the Iron Curtain. It is therefore important to reconstruct the historical past from recollections and memoirs. Most of these books are dedicated to Polish and Lithuanian communities. Although this article reports on the relevant literature published in the United States, a significant number of publications have come out of other countries (Argentina).
