Jaskot argues that most often historians present visual images as transparent and realistic indicators, presenting them as 'direct transmission of information or theology'. Examining these images, contextualizing them within the cultural and social positions of their time enables Jaskot to reveal them as complex and important source material and he discusses the artistic production of these images as well as their reception in the culture in which they circulate
