The children were in Yugoslavia, on their way to Palestine when the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia forced them to seek safety in the Italian occupied zone of Slovenia. The children were first rescued by the Italian army and later transferred to Modena. The local population were successful in hiding all of them and the group eventually found safety in Switzerland.
