This chapter will present the circumstances affecting the restitution question in Poland. On the whole Polish Jews lost their possessions to foreign occupation authorities or as a consequence of destruction by invading armies. In west and central Poland almost all kinds of Jewish property passed into the ownership of the Third Reich. Some of the property of victims went into the hands of Polish individuals
