The author explores the issue of cross national comparison - the questions of what is the place of National Socialism in German history and what is its meaning for the identity of the Federal Republic are addressed. Argued is that a long and fruitful, though recently neglected, approach to German history from a comparative perspective, the Sonderweg, or special path theory should be readopted.
