This chapter is a brief introduction to a complicated and contentious story, the massacre of Ukrainian Jewry. Some Ukrainians perceived "the Jews" as collaborators with Soviet Communists who had recently taken over West Ukraine and who had earlier presided over the collectivisation of agriculture and a mass faminein the early 1930s, today regarded by some Ukrainians as their "Holocaust" in Soviet Ukraine.
