Varian Fry, an American, sees what is happening to the Jews in France under the German occupation. He resolves to do something about it and persuades fellow Americans to back him financially and starts an emergency rescue commission to lobby to help intellectuals and artists, especially Jews, escape from Vichy France .He travels to Marseilles and helps get some 2,000 Jews escape, before being arrested and deported himself.
